Environmental Science/GIS two-year Visiting Assistant Professor

The Environmental Studies Program at Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Environmental Science and GIS to begin August 1, 2013.The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. by time of appointment in earth systems science, environmental geology, environmental geography, atmospheric sciences, biogeochemistry, climatology, global environmental change, or a related field. Teaching and research interests that utilize Geographic Information Systems are particularly desirable.  Teaching responsibilities include two sections of Introduction to Earth Systems Science with associated lab sections; Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using ArcGIS; Intermediate GIS; and an elective offering in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful applicant will also be expected to supervise student research and contribute to the Environmental Studies Program.  This two-year position has the potential to be converted to a tenure-track position.

Rosen Fellowship

If you ever imagined a unique project that would advance your personal development, the Rosen Fellowship Program is designed to help you achieve your dreams.

The Fellowship grants undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to create an out-of-classroom experience that will promote creative or career advancement. In its inaugural year, the program will support up to three students who might not otherwise be able to afford such opportunities and who exhibit extraordinary creativity, determination and promise in articulating and pursuing their career and life goals.

Students may propose a full range of activities, such as: study abroad, personalized internships, scientific research or community engagement. All applications will be evaluated on the basis of creativity and the degree to which the proposal could advance the student's personal and professional goals.

Fellowships are competitive and will provide stipends of up to $5000 to each recipient.

Dr. Paul Hirsch to speak at Yale Law conference

Dr. Paul Hirsch is a guest speaker at a Yale Law School conference New Directions in Environmental Law: The Power of Voice on March 2, 2013.

Dr. Hirsch will be speaking at a workshop on the topic of "Navigating Complex Trade-offs in Environmental Decision-Making: Valuation, Process, and Power." The workshop will look at developing and exploring questions that come logically prior to, and shape the possibilities for, the engagement of diverse voices in navigating the hard choices that arise when values conflict. The idea is proposed that explicitly framing environmental decision problems in terms of ‘complex trade-offs’ opens up possibilities for voice that are simplified out of the picture when problems are framed as ‘win-wins’ or merely as ‘trade-offs,’ and that are mired in complexity to the point of impotence when problems are framed merely as ‘complex’ or even as ‘wicked.’

Dr. Daniel Wildcat, Ph.D., is a professor at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, and an accomplished indigenous scholar, writer, thinker and activist. He leads the American Indian & Alaska Native Climate Change Working Group. A Yuchi member of the Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma, Dr. Wildcat is the coauthor, with Vine Deloria, Jr., of Power and Place: Indian Education in America. His newest book is "Red Alert! Saving the Planet with Indigenous Knowledge."

Publication by Marvin Montefrio

The work by Marvin Montefrio and co-authored by David Sonnenfeld, entitled "Global-local tensions in Contract Farming of Biofuel Crops Involving Indigenous Communities in the Philippines" will be published in the March 2013 issue of Society & Natural Resources.


Abstract
Farming of biofuel crops by local communities under contract with parastatal and private firms is being established in the Philippines and elsewhere. This study explores tensions in integrating indigenous peoples into the global biofuels network. Drawing from critical perspectives on contract farming and from the environmental sociology of networks and flows, we examine production relations associated with contract farming of Jatropha on indigenous lands in the Philippines. In on-site observations and interviews, we found that while some indigenous groups grow Jatropha in polyculture, shifting-cultivation systems as part of biofuel contracts, these smallholder production systems are being phased out or transformed by the global biofuels network. In contract farming relationships involving biofuel crops, there seems to be a greater tendency for indigenous peoples to adapt to, or be left outside of, global production networks than for the latter to include indigenous peoples in socially and ecologically sustainable ways.

We celebrate multi-culturalism, yet cultural differences are often portrayed as serving as barriers to effective communication. Cross-cultural interactions offer enormous opportunities for mutual learning, but cultural differences are also seen as sparking or exacerbating conflicts from the inter-personal to the global levels. Whether from a career or personal perspective, one needs a sophisticated and sensitive understanding of culture and cultural differences. For those interested in conflict management in our increasingly globalized and multi-cultural society, such awareness and appreciation are essential. 

This workshop will seek to address to provide knowledge and skills that will help you communicate and act more effectively cross-culturally. We will introduce cutting-edge ideas about the nature of culture and its relationship to culture. Attention will be placed on developing and practicing skills that will aid in cross-cultural analysis and interactions. The workshop will be interactive with simulations and participatory activities.

The workshop will be led by Professor A. Peter Castro.

The AMNH MAT is a unique, residency-based teacher education program that is designed to turn great science majors into extraordinary science teachers.  The program employs intensive mentoring and extensive use of technology to provide degree candidates with a mastery of an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning secondary Earth and space science that demonstrates the relevance of science to students' lives.  Course work will also deepen candidates Earth and space science content knowledge.  Doctoral-level Museum scientists and educators teach all coursework.  Teacher candidates work side-by-side with mentor teachers in NYC-area middle and high schools, putting theory into practice in classroom settings throughout an entire school year.

The Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc. and the Environmental Consortium of Colleges & Universities are pleased to announce the 2013 Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc. Founders Fund Scholarship.  This merit scholarship, in the amount of $3,500, is offered annually in the name of the TGF founders, to a single recipient who has demonstrated excellence and outstanding dedication in a field of study that falls within an environmental field of a school or department.  It was the hope of the founders, as it is the hope of the current membership of Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, that the recipient will use this scholarship to assist his or her studies, and after graduation seek employment in the tri-state region in either the public or private sector furthering the cause of environmental protection and riparian habitat conservation for the benefit of all.  The eligible applicant’s major shall be in an area of environmental studies such as, but not limited to, ecology, hydrology, conservation biology, natural resource management, zoology or environmental law and policy.  Based on a 4.0 scale, the applicant shall demonstrate merit with a current 3.5 GPA in the environmental concentration courses and an overall minimum 3.0 GPA. 

This scholarship is available to:

• Undergraduate students who will have Senior standing as of Fall 2013, who will be enrolled, and who will continue to be enrolled during the award year (2013-2014 academic year), in a full-time four-year undergraduate degree at a member institutionof the Environmental Consortium. [Students apply for the scholarship in their Junior year.]
• Graduate students who will be enrolled, and who will continue to be enrolled during the award year (2013-2014 academic year), in a full-time graduate degree program at a member institution of the Environmental Consortium.
